Still pretty dry in spite of the recent snow we received. The ground is not moist at all. There is a small amount of snow pack left in my "meadow" but most of it has blown away or sublimated. No additional fire restrictions in the area beyond the normal Stage 1 restrictions in the National Park. Plants are now dormant for the year. Conifers seem to be doing OK. It takes them quite a while to develop visible signs of drought stress so it may be weeks, months, or even years before they exhibit signs of drought stress. Wildlife continues to come and go around my property. A very large herd of elk stopped by yesterday and spent quite a bit of time browsing and grazing the (mostly) dry grasses, forbs, shrubs, and trees. Have not seen the deer, but there have been many birds visiting the bird bath for water. Lack of snow has had an impact on recreation in the park. The sledding hill at Hidden Valley was closed. Hiked down in Wild Basin today and it was definitely a hike, not a snow shoe or a ski. We didn't even need micro-spikes on the trail. Big Thompson river below Moraine Park is flowing about average for this time of year, which is good. However, Snotel sites are reporting 61% of Average SWE for my 6-Digit HUC and a slightly better 75% for my 8-Digit HUC. My location is at 57% of PRISM Normal precipitation MTD and YTD and 52% of PRISM Normal WYTD.
