Fire danger is low. Water is abundant, at times this week, more than we appreciated! Three and a half inches of rain on Thursday into an already saturated landscape was impactful. Some area roads were closed - one major route near us for over 24 hours. Even roads that remained open often had areas where water was flowing over them a few inches deep. The mobile home park at Carver was put under level 3 evacuation. I haven't yet been by it to see what happened there. Our little creek was up by at least 3 feet sometime during the night Thursday, and our footbridge was taken away and the 6 big logs that had been stuck under the Mattoon Road bridge were also all gone. I think I saw one of the longest go downstream in Clear Creek Friday morning. A number of trees came down. Most were ones that had been standing dead since the 2020 fire, but I saw a big live dougfir that came down too. Some of these fell across roads and driveways, and were quickly cut up by residents. Our neighbor was caught out front cleaning out our culverts - much appreciated. The power has winked a few times - but not been out over a minute. A cable service company was here for several hours one morning doing something with their overhead lines. The warmth that accompanied this rain means we have not used nearly as much firewood this winter as we usually might. Grass is still green and growing fairly well. In fact, I seeded some into weedy and bare spots. We shall see how that goes. Birds made themselves somewhat scarce in the early part of the week - maybe the hawk was hunting, but I didn't see it. The deer seem to be hanging out up on the hill - it is probably not safe at all for them to ford our little stream, and there is a livestock guardian dog up there which may be keeping the coyotes away. We have now exceeded the average precipitation - both for the calendar year, and for the water year. Yesterday was mostly dry and somewhat sunny, and most of the water issues locally have subsided significantly. Our puddles are smaller, and the creek dropped probably a foot and a half, if not 2 feet.
