Station Name: Roanoke 1.9 SSW
Report Date: 12/15/2025
Submitted: 12/15/2025 5:54 PM
Scale Bar: Moderately Dry
Description:
Station precipitation at mid-month (Dec. 1-15) stands at 1.34" (rain and melted snow) or 87% of of NOAA climatology, a departure from normal of -0.21". Several small snow events and much colder than normal temperatures have marked the first two weeks of the meteorological winter. The water year (Oct. 1-Dec. 15) is off to a very poor start with only 3.68" or 48% of normal precip. and a deficit of -4.01". Year-to-date (since Jan. 1) station precipitation stands at 39.11" or 94% of normal. November was extremely dry with only 23% of normal precipitation and ranked as the 7th driest November since 1912 at KROA climate cite. Hydrologic indicators have little improvement or continue to decline. The USGS gage on the Roanoke River at Roanoke 7-day flow (as of 12/14) was up just slightly to 93 cfs or the 12th percentile of all flows for the date (40% of median) and in Moderate Hydrologic Drought category (10-24th percentile). Carvins Cove local water supply reservoir (as of 12/15) dropped to -9.3 feet below full pond (77.4% of capacity) a 1.1 ft. fall in the past two weeks. The US Drought Monitor (USDM) map valid as of 12/9/25 continues to show Moderate Drought conditions (D1) across most of VA with the exception of the far southwest and coastal. No doubt that 'Moderately Dry' remains applicable although specific impacts remain limited due to the season. NWS CPC has issued a La Niña Advisory with La Niña is present in the tropical Pacific and a 3-month ONI of -0.6 for the SON period. This is not a pattern favorable for Mid-Atlantic precipitation and the CPC winter (DJF) forecast indicates an enhanced probability of drier than normal conditions.
