Description:
Winter came this week, complete with shovels, snowblowers and snowplows and some very cold conditions. Total precipitation this week was 1.40" with most of that coming Tuesday (1.23"). It went from snow to rain to ice in one storm. Every surface was covered with ice, making the trees sparkle for more than a day. Temps had dropped to well below freezing (wind chill temps in single numbers) until it warmed enough to melt the ice off the smaller twigs. Even four days later there is ice on the larger branches.
Lots of birds are at the bird feeder with squirrels picking up seeds dropped below it. Other than a few startled rabbits, most activity was human, clearing away the snow and ice.
The local ski area, Ward Hill, has opened. The parking lot was full on a drive-by yesterday with kids packing the slope. They started making snow before the storm too.
All signs suggest winter has arrived.
