We got measurable precipitation every day but one last week with a total of just under 2 inches of water. Tuesday brought a preview of winter with 2 inches of snow and temperatures that didn't rise above freezing all day. The snow has all melted but subsequent precipitation was a mix of rain, snow and sleet. The last leaves have fallen from the willows and oaks and the leaves on the forest floor have turned a uniform shade of brown. Numerous Winter Moths are out in the woods seeking mates. Bassett Brook and the Hoosic River are both running higher than normal and seasonal streams that have been dry since June are flowing again. The soil is saturated and water is ponding in low areas. Chipmunk and squirrel activity has dropped off but deer and coyote are still very active. Additional flocks of geese are migrating south. Greylock hiking and biking trails have standing or flowing water in normally wet areas and some snow remaining at the highest elevations.
