General Awareness: This is the first Condition Report I have submitted in 3 weeks, thanks to significant IT problems over the last 2 weekends. That said, there’s not much new to report. We received a total of 0.26 inch of precip on 23-24 Oct, the only precip received in the last 3 weeks. We closed out October with a total precip of 0.80 inch, which is 45% below the NOAA 30 year normal. No precip has been received since 24 Oct, making our YTD precip -1.19 inches and 8% below the NOAA 30 year normal. The soil moisture was normally dry throughout the past three weeks, with no soil cracking observed. Therefore, I continue to classify our condition as NEAR NORMAL, with the caveat of the pinion trees noted below, as I have been reporting for the last several months. Also as previously reported, BLM continues to post the Fire Hazard as LOW at the Fort Stanton Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area (closest border approx 2.6 miles ENE of my location).
Plants & Wildlife: Several different seasonal migratory bird flocks (which I have seen during this season in previous years but have not taken the time to identify) have been dwelling around the trees on our property in the past three weeks. The growth of indigenous grasses has stopped and tall brown weeds are now widespread. The succulent type of ground cover which took over in July is now dead. Deer, elk, squirrels, and wild turkeys continue to appear healthy. Indigenous and migratory birdlife also appear healthy. Notably, I have not seen any jack or bunny rabbits on or around our property in the past 3 weeks. As has been noted for the past several months, roughly half of the pinon trees on our 10 acre property are either dead or dying from the prolonged dryness prior to the start of the monsoon season. All Juniper trees continue to look healthy, but their fruit production seems to have stopped.
Water Supply & Quality: Over the last three weeks Rio Bonito has maintained a NORMAL water level. A mildly swift and audible flow, with normally clear water clarity, was observed around 1300 MDT on Saturday 08 November at the Box Canyon Trail Bridge approx 1.25 mi NNE of my station. (Bridge location: 33.4599993 N 105.6052082 W elevation 6596 feet. Rio Bonito is a primary watershed tributary from the Sierra Blanca, Lookout and Buck Mountains, approximately 12 miles SW-WSW of my location).
