The dry week allowed corn to be combined off of the fields. Most of the corn was dry enough to go straight to storage. Very little corn needed to go through dryers. Some fall tillage was done, plowing, disc chiseling, and discing at times and in places. Very few trees had leaves left on them. Most grasses were dry and some were still standing. Wildfire danger was moderate most days but higher on the really windy days with so much dry material. With much of the corn gone the varmints had less area to hide in. Sandhill cranes flocked up. Many days several hundred were in areas of less than 10 acres. A few times I saw many more in less than 15 acres, maybe over 1000. Near the end of the week geese were seen with the cranes. The flocks of geese were often over 100. Deer were rarely seen during the day. Most of the deer were seen in the evening in the headlights. Few turkeys were seen in combined fields, often 6 to 8. The creek was low with stagnant pools of murky water. A few mornings a bit of ice formed on the edges. The ponds were open and speckled with geese and ducks some days.
