Description:
The last ten days have been sunny and dry with only one rain event. Rainfall at the station for April is 30% below the 7 year average. Temperatures have been slightly above the 7 year average. However the Sun isn’t yet harsh with max UV levels medium, around 5.0. The result is near normal conditions. The Fire Danger Rating in the area is very low. Soil temperature is 14°C. The spring air is fresh. Vegetation is lush. Flowers on many shrubs and trees are in bloom. At the station the pear tree has lost its petals, the cherry just shed its last petals, and the apple tree is in full bloom. It seems to be a good year for the amount of flowers in general. Grass is lush and green, growing quickly. No watering required. Insects are now active, small flies of various kinds, wasps are waking up. Mornings are filled with the songs of numerous types of birds nesting in the neighbourhood. Hummingbirds have been actively feeding, at least two visit the station feeder numerous times daily. The last significant snowfall on nearby Grouse Mountain elev 1200m was April 9th, all ski runs are closed now, this was the last local mountain offering skiing. Athletic tracks and parks in the city are getting busier. Not quite shorts and t-shirt weather yet. It gets cool in the evenings and at night. It’s a beautiful spring.
