General Awareness Fire Plants & Wildlife
| Our dry streak finally ended this past week as I measure 0.34" of rain across five days! Although the quantities were small at least it was precipitation which we needed. I ceased reporting snow pack information as the coverage was extremely fragmented as in less than 10%. The high temps remained above normal which has really opened up the streams and rivers and even the lakes are showing open water. The moose remain MIA but the wild birds are loving the warm sunshine. Sadly, so are the damned mosquitoes which are definitely back! Right on the heels of said mosquitoes are the tourists; the tour buses are regularly clogging the Spur into Talkeetna. |

| It's been wet lately. Wednesday afternoon, Thursday, and Friday morning were somewhat dry, and there was a frenzy of grass mowing in the area. In general grass was tall and wet, and most mown areas have windrows of clippings as a result. The creek is noisy and has plenty water, the chickens' water trays have filled up with rain. Children's baseball games were probably put off schedule. Even the oaks and ashes are leafing out now, and many things are in bloom. Swallows are revamping the nest box over the back porch. Fire danger is low. Fields are mostly muddy and sticky now, but farmers got in a long work day on Thursday. The blackberry vines are growing vigorously, and the creeping blackberry and wild strawberries are in bloom, as well as lettuce. |

Lake residents are assembling dock systems, and one boat was seen out fishing this weekend. Deciduous shrubs and trees are budding, with blooms on birches and willows. Low lying boggy areas are a bit wetter, and small creeks have an increased flow. A little extra water in the ditches earlier in the week is now gone. Grass is green and growing. Tulips, daffodils and other perennials are emerging. Summer songbirds are returning. Looking to enjoy the upcoming warm and dry days, but concerned about the drying effect of the strong winds forecasted. Forest fire risk in the immediate area has been upgraded to moderate. |
