Notes
This date 1990, a Fujita Scale F5 tornado (261 - 318 mph winds) touched down in vicinity of Plainfield, Illinois (40 miles SW of Chicago) causing 29 fatalities and $165M in damages (1990 dollars). The NWS was heavily criticized for their lack of a timely tornado warning even though the approaching storm had a classic tornado supercell radar signature (hook echo). The first public warning wasn’t issued until 10 minutes AFTER the tornado had already demolished Plainfield and was en route to Joliet and Crest Hill. That warning failed to note the super tornado was already on the ground nor its track. Several NWS staffing changes ensued and the “Plainfield Syndrome” (it’s better to issue too many warnings and be wrong rather than miss a critical one) was born. Temp 74°F, dewpoint 70°F, humidity 87%, barometer 29.93 inches Hg and largely steady since midnight, clear skies, wind NNW@6-8 mph, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 72/72/73/72°F, calculated sunrise 6:37:18 EDT at station location, daylight duration 13 hrs 11 mins. EvapoTranspiration on Wednesday (8/27) was 0.16 inch. Month-to-date EVo total 3.07 inches. Month-to-date rainfall total 5.46 inches. Max wind in the past 24 hours, Thursday (8/28), NNW@8 mph, 0548 hrs. Data reported by observer4 (ampersat) foxmill.us, 0600 EDT. FoxMill Weather Station. 8/28/14.
