After a high of 63° last Sunday, high temperatures rose and stayed around 70 degrees all week. The high of the week was 72° on Tuesday and Thursday. Lows were in the 30's all week with the lowest temperature last Sunday at 33°. It was breezy at times last week and mostly clear with no precipitation falling. The surrounding wildland areas are very green with grasses and other plants. Thrip seems to have infested some fruit trees and I had to spray the trees. The lilacs are about to bloom. A male bullocks oriole is frequently visiting the bird bath. It's the third May in a row I've seen a bullocks oriole here. The swallows have visited the yard but have not tried building a nest. A lot finches and black birds are also visiting the bird bath. Have also seen a few garter snakes in the yard.  View

A wet beginning to May with almost 3 inches of rain, equaling 133% of the May average. October water year now 10 inches above the PRISM yearly total with 61.46”—now 7th wettest year in last 38 years here. Slightly cooler week with 3 days in the high 30s. Ruth Lake Reservoir 101% on 5/1. The rain brought the rivers up, with the Mad River at 9.96 ft and 3609.1 cfs/Eel River at 14.0 ft and 9148.4 cfs. California Fish and Wildlife closed the recreational razor clam fisheries due to high levels of domoic acid—what we used to call the “no clams or mussels in the months without an “r” rule” in Southern California.  View

Close to two inches of additional rain fell from Friday night to Saturday afternoon, adding to the season total. The local farmers' markets are open again for the growing season, though not too much available this early. Starting to see the late spring natives, such as thimbleberry and twin berry, in bloom. We had high winds most of the week, so the ocean was too rough for sports or fishing. Starting to see the seasonal influx of private boats and RVs.  View

Since last reported on 04/28/2024, recorded .03" on 04/29/2024 and a trace amount of snow. Hail report was also generated for small hail the evening of the 28th. No additional measurable precipitation was observed the remainder of the week. Topsoil sample taken today indicates dry soil at the surface down to about 1.0" level. At one inch and below, the soil remains moist. Grasses have mostly emerged except for one variant. Heard a Western Meadowlark this morning. Perennials continue to come out despite light freezing conditions during some mornings. Front yard has good grass coverage with more sparse green grass in the back. Mowing season will likely begin in about 2-3 weeks which would be about average. We hold off planting annuals until the end of May due to freeze risk. No high fire danger in our immediate area. However, Red Flag Warnings have been posted regularly in far SE Colorado counties and San Luis Valley due to dry fuels and stronger winds. This is the prettiest time of year to observe Pikes Peak as the snow depth and coverage are at their maximum. Will maintain Near Normal Condition Scale.  View

Probably on the dry side of Near Normal in spite of the recent moisture. The Snotel SWE readings in my drainage are green, as are most of the northern Colorado basins. Runoff has begun on the Big Thompson and Fall River. Ground around my property is damp and the grasses and sedges are beginning to green up. Currant bush buds are breaking and just a little green is showing. Aspens in my yard are pushing out leaves. Lots of bird activity in the past week. Swallows (Tree or Violet-green, not sure which) and Western Bluebirds are looking for nesting sites. Snow in the lower elevations is gone, but the high peaks are well covered in snow.  View

Just a bit more than 1/4 inch of rain has fallen since the last report a week ago, producing noticeably drier conditions. Ponding in a nearby open field has shrunk further, and is now confined to just a small area. Fire conditions have now been moderate for the past several days. Warmer temperatures have prompted growth of both grass and newly planted greenery, including lettuce and similar agricultural products. Local reservoir levels remain high, and small animal activity has picked up. Public health reports continue to be positive, and commercial activity remains brisk. With favorable weather, outdoor activities are in full swing.  View

This past week was a bit more manageable relative to a couple days of rain with a few days in between each. Only issue was with the one rain it came as a downpour with wind and hail. We had 3/4 inch of rain in a short 15 to 20 minutes. No damage from the wind and hail but a few miles to the southwest of us they had large hail blowing horizontal and homes had siding damage along with vehicle damage. The rain chances now are now forecasted and looking more like the usual summer type ones. The ground is warming up and the Cicadas are about to emerge. They are drilling their escape routes.  View

1.26" of rain this week, fabulous for my uninvited dandelion crop, which I'm trying to wipe out. We had such a mild winter that my last-year's supposedly annual flowers have returned, thicker and larger than they originally were, quite a nice showing. Where am I? Florida? Water quality is undrinkable partly because too much chlorine has been added, but I have never consumed the tap water here.  View

0.93 inches of rain fell at my station this week with anything beyond a few hundredths falling on 3 days. This is 0.10 inches below the normal for the month, and above normal for YTD and Water YTD. Areas NW of Chicago received lower amounts of rain and missed the stormy conditions that occurred in the central and south Chicagoland. Stormy weather predicted for the coming Tuesday. Everything is green, lilac is blooming, serviceberries blossoms have fallen and fruit is appearing, wild black raspberry bushes are blooming early, daffodils are making their last stand, and mushrooms are sprouting in mulched areas. Orioles and rose-breasted groosbeaks are back and the scarlet tanager is a striking sight at the platform feeder.  View

This week I received 2.11" of rain. The heavy rains last weekend resulted in runoff that quickly brought the pond level up around 5", the overflow pipe now has the level back to around an inch. Our creek is flowing close to normal. Grass is growing and requires mowing every 5-6 days. There was only a little farm field work done this week and my garden dried out enough to plant only to become to wet again from the next rain. Mother goose hatched her eggs, so we now have 6 new baby geese and a couple of mallard babies too. I have never had a goose hatch duck eggs but now I have. We will have to see if the ducks survive. So we now have two families of 6 baby geese and 2 ducks on the pond with one more nest to hatch any day. It is going to be an active and noisy year on the pond. The lilacs are done blooming and the snowball bush is in full bloom. I saw my first Baltimore Oriole enjoying some orange and jelly at the feeder, I hope for many more sightings.  View

It appears that we've returned to about as near normal as we get following all of the rain that fell last month. The area of standing water in nearby fields are just about all gone. Sunday through Sunday reports, 2.19 in of rain this week. Slowed crop planting down. was able to get everything mowed Friday with the help of my wonderful Bride of 24 yrs. as of today. Tree's are finally all getting leaves, a couple of walnuts are really slow. Grass is really growing fast now. May have to clip pastures already as they are getting ahead off the eaters I have left. Hate to do it as they report dry weather for later in the year. Flowers are doing well, we are a little late on gardening this year. More rain in the forecast for most day's of the coming week.  View

Drought improvement continues, with category D2 and D1. Decent rain received this week! AQI green. Furnace not needed. Open windows and AC utilized. Mowing required. Slight increase in flies and ants. No sign of the Cicada Bloom yet. Bird activity increased, bird excrement on my roof. Overall Mood-Most seem busy and content with Spring. Many working on their yards, getting out for recreational activities. On a personal observational note, with the drought having improved it seems more people are needing to do yard work.
