An Enlightening Chat about Lightning
Chris Vagasky
Vaisala Inc.
Louisville, CO

(Biography)

Lightning is a powerful and beautiful force of nature that was designated as an Essential Climate Variable by the World Meteorological Organization in 2017. Lightning is detected more than 2 billion times each year, nearly 80 times per second! In fact, lightning was even detected 32 miles from the North Pole on August 13, 2019. But just how is lightning detected and located?

This talk explores how lightning develops and how lightning detection systems work. We also look at data generated by lightning detection systems and how meteorologists and other scientists use those data. A discussion of lightning safety concludes the talk.
