At the farm 3.5 mi south of town we got a lot of corn planted last week. We’ve got about 900 acres in with 200 left to plant. The tile are still running and I think we are just about back to normal for moisture. I don’t think the drought is very serious right now in this area. We just need some sunshine and less wind.

The grass is growing quicker than normal. The ground is wet and muddy. The tree leaves are now almost full size - almost summerlike size due to the very wet and warmer than normal April. We are in late spring now. Pond level above average. Lawns are a little soggy. There was only one frost, which was mainly a radiational frost with air temperatures slightly above freezing and ground surfaces and rooftops slightly below freezing, on the 6th of April last month. This early April frost did not affect the trees since the temperature at the tree branch level did not go below freezing the entire month of April. This also explains why that the trees are almost in full leaf now. Even the black locust trees are in full leaf now in late spring, which these trees do not normally go into full leaf until early summer.

I am a Master Gardener & Master Naturalist. Excess water is affecting the planting, maintenence and growth of all my gardens for the pollinators, butterflies and birds. I have a certified Butterly Garden and the milkweed this year is behind schedule for blooming as well as most of the native plants I have already in the ground. However, the wildflowers on the prairie I am restoring do not seem to be affected. The vegetable garden is planted with seed and it is not doing as well as usual progress for the month. I document in my Naturalist Journal as events occur. Activities outdoors are obivously affected by the continous rain efvents.
