Station Number: MA-HD-30
Station Name: Hampden 2.0 NW
Report Date: 9/22/2020
Submitted: 9/22/2020 8:46 AM
Scale Bar: Moderately Dry
Description:
Hampden, Mass. Our town had a fire on top of Minnechaug Mt. it started on Sat, 9/19/2020 through Tuesday, 9/21. It was quickly contained but could not be put out. About seven fire departments from adjacent communities, including Conn, helped as well as state agencies. Fortunately it was not a tree top fire as the trees, though stressed, are still green. It was a forest floor fire, often down into the roots and deep in the leaf bed. The location is steep, remote without roads. The fire personnel could only get quads and small fully four-wheel drive vehicles onto the mountain, which meant they had a very limited water supply. It was put out when the Mass Air National Guard sent a helicopter water dropping unit in to assist. The air guard made somewhere in the range of a dozen drops over a good part of Tuesday. The fire will be on watch for the many next days.
