Only .31" of rain over the past week. With one week left in May, rainfall is 2.42" behind for the month. The recent rain and slightly cooler, cloudy weather has helped the crops. Prior to the rain, corn that was planted early was wilting in the afternoon sun as if it were July. Since the rain, the growth has increased and the plants look better. Sage is in full bloom, however, the farmers are waiting to see if the upcoming rain will give the plants a slight boost to produce a few more leaves before harvest. More planting occurred this past week, but there are still many unplanted fields. Garlic tops are dying off early, even with some watering occurring. Deeper soil moisture is still poor. Bird bath use is far more frequent than normal, likely due to lack of standing water in the swamps and salinity in the Sound.
