This date 2010, the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil spill (British Petroleum Macondo blowout) was officially declared sealed although persistent unofficial reports continue to allege intermittent leakage. The 20 April wellhead blowout claimed 11 lives on the offshore oil platform and the Deepwater Horizon spill is considered the largest marine oil spill in the petroleum industry’s history. Estimated spillage was 4.9M gallons of crude oil. BP pled guilty to 11 felony neglect charges and paid $4B in fines plus cleanup costs. Partner Transocean paid another $1.4B.
